Let me explain.
That line is from a Dead Milkmen song. Even thirty years later that line makes me laugh.
When I heard it again recently it struck me differently.
The Dead Milkmen are punk satirists at the highest level. I realized that that line (and the whole song in general) is a commentary on the cheapness that tends to creep into our lives. No institution is safe.
The lesson here is that, while funny, we tend to cheapen things in the name of making things better. The song Going To Graceland should be about celebrating the legacy of Elvis and not about cheap trinkets.
Where are you doing that to yourself? Modern “thinkers” all preach some version of “you are what you think”. If that’s true, you might be undercutting yourself in an effort to minimize something.
