Communication. That wonderful topic everyone agrees we need to do more of and get better at. We attend classes, read books and post lengthy blogs. And yet, we never seem to get anywhere.

I suspect the cause of the downward spiral is because we all are communicating in different styles. Welcome to the problem. Some like talking. Some like texting. Some people struggle. Some don’t.

A possible solution would be to standardize the communication format. Put everyone on the same footing with the same expectations.

SBAR is a communication format widely used in the medical profession that has found its way into other sectors.

SBAR stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation. A cyclic process that drives to the heart of a topic.
